Distance and destination
The single biggest driver of price is the door-to-door distance. A move from a Surrey garage to Monaco costs less than the same vehicle to Marbella, and Marbella costs less than Lisbon. Transatlantic shipping to the United States carries an extra step — ocean freight in a sealed container — which moves the floor higher again. Where two routes are close on paper, the difference often comes down to how easily a transporter can reach the collection or delivery address: a central London pickup is more straightforward than a remote estate in the Highlands, and a Marbella villa is easier than a Sotogrande gated compound.
Vehicle size and weight
Trailer capacity is finite, so larger vehicles displace more of it. A city car sits comfortably on a standard transporter; a long-wheelbase saloon takes a wider bay; an SUV or pickup eats a further tranche. Width and height matter as much as length, because they govern whether the car loads on the lower or upper deck and whether tie-down geometry is straightforward. Supercars and wide-arch GTs typically need a single-vehicle haul with bespoke ramps, soft straps and chassis-friendly attachment points, which moves them into the highest pricing tier — but also the safest.
Transport mode — open, enclosed or RoRo
Open multi-vehicle transporters are the lowest-cost route. The vehicle sits on a deck exposed to weather and road debris, in company with several other cars. Enclosed single-vehicle haulage is the premium specification: a sealed trailer, no other cars, air-ride suspension and a climate-controlled environment. For luxury, classic and high-value vehicles this is the only sensible option and the price reflects it. Roll-on roll-off (RoRo) is a third option on certain routes — the car is driven onto a dedicated vehicle ferry, secured, and driven off at the destination port. It is competitive on price but unsuitable for very low cars or anything you would not park in a public car park.
Season and timing
Demand on the UK to Mediterranean corridor concentrates around the Cannes Film Festival, the Monaco Grand Prix, the summer migration to Saint-Tropez and Mallorca, and the September return. Capacity tightens, prices firm and lead times stretch. Shipping in the shoulder months — late autumn through to early spring — typically secures a lower rate and a wider choice of collection windows. The same pattern applies in reverse on the Italian Riviera and the Costa del Sol. Where your dates are flexible, sharing a range rather than a single date is the easiest way to find the most competitive slot.
Collection and delivery point
Door-to-door pricing assumes a transporter can reach a sensible loading point. A wide driveway, a private estate yard or a dealership forecourt is straightforward. A narrow mews, a multi-storey car park, a basement garage or a vehicle parked on a steep camber adds time, sometimes additional equipment, and on occasion a smaller feeder vehicle to shuttle the car to where the main transporter can wait. The same logic applies at the far end: a hotel forecourt is easier than a port-side bay, and a Larvotto residence with a goods lift is easier than a Carré d'Or apartment with a single-vehicle barrier.
Customs and documentation
Since Brexit, every UK-origin vehicle entering the EU requires a customs declaration. The cost of lodging that declaration, and of clearing the car at the destination port or land border, is usually itemised inside your quote rather than added later. For temporary admission — a visitor bringing a car for a season — duty is not payable and the paperwork is light. For a permanent import, treatment depends on residence status. For the United States, a Department of Transportation and Environmental Protection Agency entry filing applies. A specialist quote prices the clearance work properly so there are no surprises at the dock.
Insurance limits
Standard transit insurance with a specialist car shipper covers the vehicle to a limit confirmed per quote, more than enough for the everyday luxury market. Above that — Pagani, Koenigsegg, a numbers-matching 250 GT, a freshly restored E-Type with a six-figure paint cell behind it — higher cover is arranged on request and priced into the move. Insurance is not a place to compromise: the difference between a properly written policy and a generic haulier's minimum cover is the difference between a same-day repaint at the right specialist and a long argument with a loss adjuster.
Time of year and weather
Winter on the cross-Channel routes brings its own costs. Stronger Bay of Biscay swells delay sea routings; Alpine passes close intermittently; Channel ferries occasionally suspend. None of this is catastrophic for a well-run shipment, but it does push enclosed transport up the priority list for any vehicle that should not see road salt or sub-zero garaging. Conversely, mid-summer brings heat — and very dark interiors. Climate-controlled enclosed trailers keep the cabin within a sensible range; open trailers do not. Pricing reflects which protection you need, when.
